About

Meet Debbie

Mother of eleven

Trauma Into Triumph Emphasis
eleven

I couldn’t have imagined what the first 40  plus years of my life would look like, even if I tried. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, in the 70’s by Holocaust survivor parents, I navigated a world filled with untreated trauma.

At 19 I got married,  birthed  and raised 11 children. But despite my best efforts my tumultuous reality came crashing down around me.

After a very public and humiliating divorce, I found myself in my 40’s —single, with 11 kids, no money to my name, a son battling brain cancer, and my world falling apart. I knew I was at a pivotal moment.

I was faced with two choices: lose myself completely, or take a chance, bet on myself, and build a future.

My Vision

I started my career as a social worker later than most, but I put myself through graduate school  while supporting my family.

I spent countless late nights studying  and writing in the library and working tirelessly to provide for my children and secure a future for us.

I graduated from Yeshiva University and began my career in addiction counseling, all while my son fought—and ultimately lost—his battle with cancer.

In the midst of this heartbreak, I navigated a new relationship, remarried, and blended a family of 11 children with 8 new stepchildren.

After losing my son and, tragically, my granddaughter in a car accident within the span of one year, I needed to push even harder.

I completed  my  PhD, focusing my dissertation on the lack of addiction treatment centers in the Jewish community.

Slowly, I began to build my career, focusing on addiction, advocating for communities in need of  education and treatment. Currently I maintain a private practice, teach at the university, publish articles  and  speak world -wide to audiences about  grief ,trauma , healing and recovery.

This year, on the 10th anniversary of my son Boruch’s untimely death, I launched The Pink Elephant Podcast. This podcast allows me to continue to spread the message of Triumph from Tragedy.
